Het Britse rockband The Police is in 1977 opgericht. Het bestond uit Sting (zang, basgitaar), Andy Summers (gitaar) en Stewart Copeland (drums). Hun muziek onderscheidt zich door een fusie van stijlen, met name rock, reggae, jazz en punk. The Police heeft zowel kritisch als commercieel succes geboekt met albums als "Outlandos d'Amour" (1978), "Regatta de Blanc" (1979), "Zenyatta Mondatta" (1980) en "Ghost in the Machine" (1981). Het band is in 1984 uit elkaar gegaan, om zich in 2007 weer te verenigen voor een tournee.
