Tommy Johnson (1896-1956) was an American blues singer and guitarist who played a pivotal role in the development of Delta blues. He is best known for his recordings of "Canned Heat Blues" and "Cool Drink of Water Blues." Johnson was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. He began playing guitar at a young age and was entirely self-taught. He developed a distinctive playing style, influenced by the music of Charley Patton and other Delta blues musicians. In the 1920s, Johnson recorded several records for the Victor and Paramount labels. These recordings were a commercial success and helped to popularize the Delta blues style. In the 1930s, Johnson toured the United States with blues singer and guitarist Robert Johnson. He also recorded for the Bluebird and Decca labels. The later years of Tommy Johnson were marked by alcoholism and poverty. He died in 1956 at the age of 60.
