Sokolovsky was born in Moscow, Russia, on December 21, 1966. He began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly started composing his own music. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and later at the Saint-Petersbourg Conservatory. He has worked as a music teacher in both institutions. Sokolovsky has been a member of the Russian Academy of Arts since 2001. His music has been performed by some of the world's greatest orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
