BIOGRAPHY

Sinéad Marie Bernadette O'Connor, born on December 8, 1966 in Dublin, is an Irish singer-songwriter and musician. O'Connor began her musical career in 1987 with the release of her first album, The Lion and the Cobra. She found international success with her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, in 1990, which reached number one in the UK and the US. The album was certified seven times platinum in the US and won two Grammy Awards, including for Best Pop Song for the song "Nothing Compares 2 U". O'Connor continued to release albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s, although her commercial success waned. She took a break from her musical career in 2003 before making a comeback in 2006 with the album Sean-Nós Nua. She subsequently released two gospel albums, Theology (2007) and How About I Be Me (And You Be You)? (2012). In 2017, she released her ninth studio album, Memoirs of an Exile. Throughout her career, O'Connor has faced challenges related to her public image and has been involved in several controversies. In 1992, she tore a photo of Dublin Archbishop Desmond Connell on the set of Saturday Night Live in protest of child sexual abuse by Catholic priests. In 1993, she refused to perform at the Grammy Awards due to what she considered to be excessive commercialization of the music industry. In 2000, she announced that she was leaving the music industry to focus on religion and spirituality, but she returned to music a few years later. O'Connor has been praised for her powerful and expressive voice, and has been compared to artists such as Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin. She has been a prominent figure in pop and rock music of the 1990s, and her influence extends to folk, Celtic and religious music. She has been described as a "counterculture icon" and a "marginal artist".
