Nikolauss, whose real name is Nikolaus Harnoncourt, was an Austrian musician and conductor, born on December 6, 1929 in Vienna and died on March 5, 2016 in Johanneshof (Styria). Considered one of the greatest conductors of the 21st century, he was a pioneer in the performance of Baroque and Classical music on period instruments. He was the principal conductor of the Concentus Musicus Wien orchestra from 1954 to 1967 and again from 1986 to 1991. He was the musical director of the English Chamber Orchestra from 1972 to 1979, and guest conductor for the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, among others. He was appointed a Knight of the Order of the British Empire in 1986, and was elevated to Knight of the Order of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1992. In 2001, he received the Polar Music Prize, and in 2008, the Grammy Award for Best Classical Recording for his recording of the complete symphonies of Haydn with the Vienna Baroque Orchestra.
