BIOGRAPHY
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (January 12, 1918 - February 5, 2008) was an Indian guru, known for developing the Transcendental Meditation technique and for being the leader of the Maharishi International University. He became a disciple and assistant of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya (Jagadguru) of Jyotirmath in the Indian Himalayas. The Maharishi credits Brahmananda Saraswati with inspiring his teachings. In 1955, the Maharishi began introducing his Transcendental Deep Meditation technique (later renamed Transcendental Meditation) to the western world. His first major success occurred in 1967 when he gained the support of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Rolling Stones. Maharishi also worked with musician Mick Jagger and other celebrities. At the height of his popularity, he oversaw a large number of his "TM" centers. However, by the end of the 1960s, the Maharishi's popularity had waned and he retreated to India. In the 1980s, the Maharishi introduced his "TM-Sidhi" program, which claimed to offer practitioners the ability to levitate and create world peace. The Maharishi gained fame as the Beatles' guru in the 1960s, and his teachings continue to have a major influence on popular culture.
