BIOGRAPHY
James Minas is an American composer and musician born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1951. He studied composition with Mario Davidovsky and electroacoustic music with Vladimir Ussachevsky at the New York Conservatory of Music. He also studied with Gottfried Michael Koenig at the Institute of Electroacoustic Music in Cologne, Germany.
Minas has composed music for films, theater pieces, choreographies, and multimedia installations. His works have been performed at numerous contemporary music festivals, including Darmstadt, Gaudeamus, Huddersfield, IAWM, ISCM, June in Buffalo, Metropolis Bleu, Musica Nova, North/South Consonance, NYSCA, SEAMUS, SoundSCAPE, and Unyazi.
Minas was a member of the Continuum contemporary music ensemble from 1992 to 2001, and was artistic director of the electroacoustic music ensemble Earplay from 2002 to 2009. He currently teaches composition and electroacoustic music at the University of California, Davis.
