Dean Thomas (born October 21, 1965) is an American rock singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Train.
Thomas was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He began playing guitar at the age of 15, and soon after joined his first band, a cover band called Powerchord. He later became the frontman of the bands Mother and Red House, before forming Train in 1993.
Train's self-titled debut album was released in 1994 and was a commercial success, with over two million copies sold. The second single from the album, "Meet Virginia," became a hit in the top 40 in the US, and the group's first top 10 single in the UK.
Train's second album, Drops of Jupiter, was released in 2001 and was an even greater success than the first, selling over four million copies in the US. The title track of the album won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song, and the album itself was nominated for Best Rock Album.
Train's third album, My Private Nation, was released in 2003 and was another commercial success, with over two million copies sold in the US. The first single from the album, "Calling All Angels," was a hit in the top 10 in the US and UK.
Train's fourth album, For Me, It's You, was released in 2006 and was a moderate success, with over one million copies sold in the US. The first single from the album, "Capsize," was a hit in the top 40 in the US.
Train's fifth album, Save Me, San Francisco, was released in 2009 and was a commercial success, with over two million copies sold in the US. The first single from the album, "Hey, Soul Sister," was a worldwide hit, reaching the top 10 in several countries, including the US, UK, and Australia.
Train's sixth album, California 37, was released in 2012 and was another commercial success, with over one million copies sold in the US. The first single from the album, "Drive By," was a hit in the top 10 in the US, UK, and Australia.
Train's seventh album, A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat, was released in 2017 and was a commercial success, with over one million copies sold in the US. The first single from the album, "Play That Song," was a hit in the top 10 in the US, UK, and Australia.
Thomas has also released two solo albums, Counting Airplanes (2007) and As Far as Dreams Go (2009).
