BIOGRAPHY
Con Phillips (born in 1965) is an Australian composer and sound artist. His work is characterized by a focus on process, often involving the use of self-developed software, and an interest in the relationship between music, visual arts, and architecture.
Phillips was born in Sydney and studied composition at the University of Melbourne, where he obtained a doctorate in 1992. His thesis, titled "Composition with Processes," explored the use of computer-based processes in composition.
Phillips has composed a wide range of works for various ensembles and performers, including the Australian String Quartet, the Elision Ensemble, the London Sinfonietta, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with several visual artists, including Australian artist Fiona Hall.
Phillips has held various teaching positions, including at the Victorian College of the Arts, the University of Melbourne, and the University of New South Wales. He is currently a composition professor at the University of Sydney.
