Biography of Ben Alonzi Ben Alonzi is an American musical artist born on March 16, 1975, in New York, New York, USA. He grew up in Queens and studied music at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music. He later pursued composition and arrangement with trumpeter and composer Ralph Alessi at New York University, and electro-acoustic composition with composer Mario Davidovsky at Columbia University. Alonzi subsequently obtained his doctorate in musical composition from the University of Southern California in 2006. Alonzi began his career as a trumpet player in the New York-based brass band Lucky Chops, before joining the rock band The Dazzling Killmen in 1995, where he played trumpet, guitar, and piano. In 1996, he joined the avant-garde jazz group Naked City, and in 2001, he co-founded the avant-garde jazz trio Mephista with pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and percussionist Ikue Mori. The trio released three albums together, with the first, "Entomology," nominated for Jazz Album of the Year by Down Beat magazine in 2004. In addition to his group collaborations, Alonzi has worked as an arranger and composer for several artists, including Dave Douglas, Matthew Shipp, David S. Ware, George Lewis, and Jenny Scheinman. He has also composed music for films and documentaries such as "I Am Not Your Negro" by Raoul Peck, "The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975" by Göran Hugo Olsson, and "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution" by Stanley Nelson. Currently, Ben Alonzi resides in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife, violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman, and their two children.
