BIOGRAPHY
Barry Jay (born Barry Jay Pincus; March 4, 1942) is an American rock and roll drummer, best known as a member of the band Paul Revere & the Raiders. He also worked as a session musician and solo artist.
Jay was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Far Rockaway, Queens. He began playing the drums at a young age, and by his teenage years, he was playing in local bands. He began working as a professional musician in the early 1960s, playing in clubs and studios in New York. In 1963, he met Paul Revere Dick, leader of the band Paul Revere & the Raiders. Jay joined the group shortly after and remained with them for over a decade.
During his time with the Raiders, the group had several hit singles, including "Kicks" and "Hungry." They also released several successful albums, such as Midnight Ride and Revolution!.
In the late 1970s, Jay left the Raiders and pursued a solo career. He released two albums, Barry Jay and One Way Ride, but neither were commercially successful. He then returned to studio and touring work, playing with various artists including Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen.
In the 1990s, Jay rejoined the Raiders for a reunion tour. The group has continued to tour periodically since then, and Jay remains an active member.
Jay is a highly respected drummer and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Drummer Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
