BIOGRAPHY

Sarah McLachlan is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician born on January 28, 1968, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She began her musical career playing piano and flute in her school's classical music ensembles before turning to pop and rock music in high school. In 1985, she joined the new wave band Octopus, with whom she recorded a self-titled album. McLachlan then pursued a solo career and signed with Arista Records in 1987. Her debut album, Touch, was released in 1988, followed by Solace in 1991, both certified gold in Canada. In 1993, her third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, became a commercial and critical success, certified platinum in Canada and the United States. McLachlan gained international fame with her 1997 album Surfacing, certified diamond in Canada and the United States. The project won two Grammy Awards and was praised for its sophisticated production and elaborate arrangements. The singles "Building a Mystery" and "I Will Remember You" both topped the Billboard Hot 100. In 1999, the live album Mirrorball was certified seven times platinum in the United States and won a Grammy. In 2003, Afterglow was also successful, certified four times platinum in the United States with the singles "Fallen" and "World on Fire". In 2006, Wintersong, a Christmas album, was certified double platinum in the United States with the tracks "Wintersong" and "River". The artist has released several compilations of her greatest hits, including Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff in 1996, Remixed in 2003, and Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan in 2008. In 2005, she founded the Lilith Fair, a musical tour featuring female artists from various musical backgrounds. In 2010, she released her eighth studio album, Laws of Illusion, certified platinum in Canada. Her ninth album, Shine On, released in 2014, was certified gold in Canada. Sarah McLachlan has received numerous awards throughout her career, including three Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and two Juno Awards. In 2013, she was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
