Ne-Yo, born Shaffer Chimere Smith, is an American multi-talented artist, both a singer-songwriter, producer, and actor, born on October 18, 1982, in Camden, Arkansas.
After moving to Las Vegas with his mother and attending a performing arts school in the city, Ne-Yo began his musical career writing songs for artists such as B2K, Marques Houston, Mary J. Blige, and Faith Evans. In 2004, he signed a contract with Def Jam Recordings and released his first album, In My Own Words, in 2006. The album, including the hits "So Sick" and "Sexy Love", sold over two million copies in the United States.
His second album, Because of You (2007), reached number one on the Billboard 200 and includes the singles "Because of You" and "Do You". His third album, Year of the Gentleman (2008), sold over three million copies worldwide and contains the singles "Closer" and "Miss Independent". In 2010, he released his fourth album, Libra Scale, with the hits "Beautiful Monster" and "Champagne Life".
Ne-Yo has also made his film debut, appearing in films such as Stomp the Yard (2007), Battle: Los Angeles (2011) and Red Tails (2012). In 2012, he was named vice-president of artistic creation for Motown Records. His fifth album, R.E.D., was released in 2013.
