Paula Julie Abdul (born June 19, 1962) is an American multi-talented artist, known for her career as a singer, dancer, actress, producer, director, choreographer, model, and former judge of dance. In 1991, she was ranked second in Forbes' list of the 100 most powerful celebrities. She began her career in the 1980s as a pop music choreographer before achieving worldwide success in the 1990s with her second album Spellbound. She later became a judge on the television show American Idol, receiving several Emmy Award nominations. Paula Abdul has also received nominations for Grammy Awards and American Music Awards. In 2008, she was ranked 85th in Forbes' list of the 100 most powerful celebrities. Born in San Fernando, California, to Syrian-Lebanese parents, Paula Abdul was raised Jewish and baptized in the Roman Catholic Church. She studied jazz dance at Van Nuys High School and California State University, Northridge.
