BIOGRAPHY
Chico Buarque, born June 19, 1944, in Rio de Janeiro, is a Brazilian singer-songwriter, musician, and theater director. Son of composer and music critic Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Chico Buarque is one of the most prolific and famous authors of Brazilian popular music. He began his career in the 1960s, composing songs in collaboration with his brother, poet and lyricist Paulo Buarque de Hollanda.
In the 1970s, Chico Buarque achieved international success with songs such as "A Banda", "Samba de Orly", and "Apesar de Você". He was also strongly committed to the fight against the military dictatorship in Brazil, and several of his songs were censored on the radio during that period.
After the end of the dictatorship, Chico Buarque continued to compose and record numerous albums, as well as write theater plays and novels. Among his most famous works are the albums "O Que Será" (1976), "Chico Buarque de Hollanda" (1984) and "Carioca" (1989).
In 2000, Chico Buarque was elected "best Brazilian composer of the century" by a jury composed of musicians and music critics. He was also decorated with the "Ordem do Mérito Cultural", the highest distinction of the Brazilian government, in 2006.
Chico Buarque continues to compose and record new songs today. His latest album, "Caravanas", was released in 2016.
