Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, known mononymously as Selena, born April 16, 1971, and died March 31, 1995, was an American singer-songwriter, actress, and fashion designer. Known as the "queen of Tejano music," her contributions to music and fashion make her one of the most celebrated Latin artists of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine named her the Latin artist of the decade in the 1990s, while readers of the magazine named her the Best Female Latin Artist of the Century in 1998. The media have nicknamed her the "Tejano Madonna" due to her fashion choices. She is also recognized as one of the most influential Latin artists of all time and is known for bringing a genre of music to the mainstream market.
