Ella Fitzgerald fut une chanteuse de jazz américaine, considérée comme l'une des plus grandes voix du jazz de l'histoire. Elle débute sa carrière au Savoy Ballroom à Harlem en 1934 et enregistre pour la première fois avec le big band de Chick Webb en 1935. Fitzgerald signe avec Decca Records en 1936 et y enregistre plusieurs albums, dont "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" et "The Cole Porter Songbook". Elle part en tournée avec le band de Benny Goodman en 1938 et sort son premier album solo, "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook", en 1956. Fitzgerald est nommée "La Première Dame du Jazz" par le magazine DownBeat en 1960. Elle enregistre plusieurs albums avec le label Verve Records, tels que "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook" et "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Harold Arlen Songbook". Fitzgerald est nommée Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur en France en 1973 et décède le 15 juin 1996 à Beverly Hills, en Californie.
